Long Covid is the most common summary term for the lingering or protracted illness that COVID-19 afflicted patients continue to experience well beyond recovery from initial respiratory systems. It is also known as “ongoing symptomatic COVID-19,” “chronic COVID-19,” “post-acute COVID-19” syndrome, or “long-haul “COVID-19.”
Common symptoms are fatigue, labored breathing, headaches, chronic cough, loss of smell, brain fog, loss or modification of taste, sleep deprivation, anxiety, depression, memory impairment, and loss of ability to concentrate. Debilitating neuropsychiatric, pulmonary, cardiovascular, skin, muscle, skeletal symptoms are also reported. There is a high probability that the combined COVID-19 symptoms of neurological, physical, and psychiatric illnesses, as well as inflammatory damage to the brain, increase suicidal behavior in patients.
The underlying biological manifestation in this raft of symptoms is poorly known. Much work needs to be done on the disease’s epidemiology, clinical manifestations, predictors of risk, and management strategies. Research cataloging symptoms, clinical trials, and long-term observational studies must combine with the origination of rehabilitation centers, clinics prepared to address the wide range of symptoms. There must be a mechanism of hope for desperate COVID-19 sufferers.
The Charles M. Vallee Foundation for Long Covid research is a grant originating organization focused on providing grants for researchers focused on the nexus of Long Covid to neurological effects on the brain.
